NEW DELHI, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-three-year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen made history on Friday in the southern Indian city Chennai by dethroning five-time title-holder Viswanathan Anand and becoming the world's youngest chess champion.
Magnus Carlsen took the crown after a toughly won draw with Anand in the 10th game of the World Chess Championship.
Carlsen closed the championship with two games to spare by winning 6.5 points out of a perfect 10. He won three and drew seven games while Anand, 44 and a native Chennai man, won none. Friday's game lasted four hours and 45 minutes before both Carlsen and his Indian host reached their limit and were on the brink of collapse.
This is also the only time for Anand to have lost or drawn in all games in a world championship match, after playing for 22 years on the criss-cross board.
Anand employed the Sicilian defense while Carlsen played Moscow variation, both using their old tactics and strategies.
Carlsen made a check on move three, parting with his light squared Bishop for a knight, resulting in a Maroczy bind. On move 14, Carlsen took back Anand's light Bishop, but failed to make a breakthrough. On the 28th move he pushed his king pawn to fifth rank. He retained his offensive by moving his king to the king side and penetrating the fifth rank, confining Anand's knight and king to the defense.
On the 46th move, Carlsen started sacrifising his last remaining pieces. In return, Anand also lost all his pawns and both players moved new queens on the board. However, Anand finally acquired a forced draw at the 65th move.
The Norwegian winner also won 60 percent of a 140 million rupee (2.25 million U.S. dollars) in the championship award.
