BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Luis Segura, announced on Sunday that the sport's leadership "does not have the solution to the violence" that has plagued the South American country's matches recently.
"Strong determination backed up by everyone is what is needed but, without everyone's support, there is no point in soccer leaders trying to rectify the issue. They can try on their own but it won't work," said Segura.
In an interview with local daily Perfil, the soccer president considered the violence to be a "cultural" issue.
"It is completely unmanageable that someone would step on the pitch with a stone and throw it at a player. I always say the same: violence isn't beneficial to anyone. It only brings suffering and damage," added Segura.
When asked whether the violent fans could be "managed," the president responded that this "has a social origin."
"Unfortunately society is violent," said Segura, adding that "the issue will be resolved the day that we establish better security, policies, justice and leaders in the country."
"We are part of this problem. But we don't have the solution," said the AFA president.
He has been president of the Association since former President Julio Humberto Grondona, 82, died in 2014.
The leader will run for election to stay in the position and will compete against businessman and television presenter Marcelo Tinelli.
