BARCELONA, Spain, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Colombia's Orlando Duque won on Wednesday gold medal in high diving at the World Championships in Barcelona, becoming the first world champion of this discipline as it is the first time in history it is part of the FINA World Championships.

After Monday first and second rounds, in which Duque scored the highest mark with 217.10 points, Tuesday saw round third, fourth and fifth.

Duque got the highest score with 590.20 points in the second day of competition, ahead of Britain's Gary Hunt, 2012 World Series champion, who was also favorite to win gold especially after he dove using the triple quad in the fourth round of Wednesday competition.

Hunt scored a total of 589.30 points which allowed him to take silver medal, followed by the youngest man in the competition, the 23-year-old Mexico's Jonathan Paredes who had 578.35 points.

The competition was attended by more than 8,000 people as high diving is being held at the Moll de la Fusta, at the Port of Barcelona, in the city center of the Mediterranean city, very close to the famous street of Las Ramblas.

Organizers built a 27-meter provisional tower at the Port of Barcelona. Men high divers jumped from a height of 27 meters while women did it from a height of 20 meters.

A total of 13 divers took part in men's high diving competition, while five women competed on Tuesday with the United States' Ginger Huber taking gold medal, Germany's Anna Bader winning silver and the American Cesilie Carlton claiming bronze.
