(BEIJING, June 18) -- Welsh 400 meters hurdler Rhys Williams has been forced to pull out of Beijing 2008 Olympics due to a stress fracture of his right foot.

The 24-year-old British sprinter was injured during the men's 200 meters at the Welsh Championships in Swansea last weekend.

Williams will not be able to compete for six weeks -- too late to run in Beijing as the British Olympic Selection Trials are being held in Birmingham on July 11-13.

It is a cruel blow for the Cardiff-born athlete. "I'm gutted, but it is not the end of me," said Williams. "This has made me more determined. You have not heard the last of me. I promise to be there doing my thing for Wales".

His father, J.J.Williams, is a British Lions rugby legend. He told English newspaper, The Times: "After all the injuries he's had, he was totally fit and feeling great so he decided to have a run out on Sunday."

Williams set his best time at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne with a time of 49.09 in men's 400 meters hurdles and won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 and also a silver medal in the men's 4×400 relay.

He now joins fellow British Olympic medal hopefuls like sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis and heptathlete Jessica Ennis on the sidelines.
