1.cliché n. 陈腔滥调
如：Cliche is a feature of bad journalism.
使用套语是拙劣的新闻体的特点。
2.counsel v. 商议，劝告
如：Mr Smith acted as counsel for the prosecution.
史密斯先生担任原告的律师。
Counsel for the defence submitted that his client was clearly innocent.
被告的律师辩称其委托人显然是无辜的。
3.fail to 未能
如：I never fail to write to my parents every month.
我每个月一定写信给我的父母亲。
Fail to pay and they'll cut off the electricity.
你(如果)不付款，他们就要断电。
4.stand by 袖手旁观
如：How can you stand by and let him treat his dog like that?
他那样虐待他那只狗，你怎么能袖手旁观呢？
I'll stand by you whatever happens.
