THE HAGUE, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- While Dutch league leaders PSV booked a narrow victory over Willem II on Saturday nearest rivals Ajax suffered a late loss at Vitesse on Sunday.
After a meager performance in the Dutch classis at Feyenoord (0-0) last week Ajax continued to struggle at Vitesse on Sunday. The home-team had the best of the game, although Vitesse lacked major chances. Bertrand Traore (Vitesse) and Anwar El Ghazi (Ajax) had the best opportunities, but failed.
Late in the second half substitute Uros Djurdjevic became match winner with an outstanding goal. The Serbian striker controlled the ball with his chest, lobbed over Ajax defender Niklas Moisander and scored with a smashing volley.
On Saturday PSV had beaten Willem II 2-1 in Eindhoven. Robert Braber gave the visitors the lead in the 30th minute. After Memphis Depay missed a penalty Jurgen Locadia equalized on behalf of PSV and Depay produced the winning goal three minutes from time.
The seventh win in a row for PSV and the loss for Ajax brought PSV one major step closer to the Dutch championship. Ajax now trail the Eindhoven based club by nine points with fourteen matches remaining.
Feyenoord, which beat ADO Den Haag 2-1 on Sunday, are third with fourteen points behind PSV and PEC Zwolle, which defeated FC Utrecht 2-0, are fourth, sixteen points behind the leaders.
