They proposed that husbands and wives should be obliged to weigh up which of their two surnames was the rarest and give it to their children. The two scientists published a mathematical model showing what would then happen if common surnames were weeded out this way. And they predicted that the most common names might become only one fifth as common as now after 50 years if the simplest scenario was adopted.
