Hard times bring new words
MAJOR news events sometimes contribute new vocabulary to popular culture. One word emerging from the ongoing economic downturn (下滑,低谷) is “recessionista”. The word refers to someone who seeks out fashionable but cheap items amid economic hardship.
“Recessionistas” believe a poor economy shouldn’t stand in the way of fashionable dressing. They dress fashionably by buying cheaper clothes from discount stores or during sales events.
The term is a combination of “recession” and “fashionista” – a person who works in or is deeply involved with the high-fashion industry, such as a designer or simply a person who loves to dress fashionably.
Finance executives first used “recessionista” in reference to a person who predicted a recession, or to a person who believes a recession would benefit the long-term health of the economy.
Over the last six months, however, publicists, retailers and even a few consumers have refashioned the word. They even use the word to spin (美化,粉饰) the economic downturn as an attractive retail trend.
For instance, Bourjois, a moderately-priced makeup company from France, sent a recent press release by e-mail to reporters promoting the brand’s cheapest products as “the Recessionista Collection”.
Here are some other expressions that have emerged during the current economic downturn:
  ■ frugal chic: an expression describing something that is both fashionable and inexpensive
  ■ recession-proof dressing: a personal fashion philosophy that can survive even the toughest of economic time
  ■ spending fast: a fast (斋戒,节制) on spending
