The Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone is the first of its kind in China to implement a "negative list". This means that industries or businesses not included on the list are open to market forces, without restriction on foreign investment.
The list covers 18 categories of industries and 190 specific regulations. Businesses banned from the zone include those related to pornograpy, gambling and ammunition manufacturing. Shanghai authorities say the list ensures applications by businesses that want to establish a presence in the zone, can be approved within 4 days. The business list is to be updated annually.
