French emergency teams have begun clearing the wreckage of a train which derailed south of Paris, killing six people. Rail transport officials say an unattached rail joint may have caused the accident.
The packed train left Paris Friday evening with 385 passengers on board. It jumped the track about 20 minutes into a scheduled three-hour journey. It crashed into the platform with carriages overturning. Nearly 200 people were injured and nine remain in a critical condition. Transport officials say human error has already been ruled out.
They are looking into how this happened since another train had traveled safely through the station about 30 minutes before. They are also trying to figure out why the train’s third car was the first to derail. The train was travelling at 137 kilometers per hour, below the 150 kilometer per hour limit, when the accident happened.
