A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Chile, killing at least one person and shaking buildings as far as the capital, Santiago.
The quake struck 101 kilometers southwest of the mining town of Copiapo, some 590 kilometers north of the capital. In lower-income areas, some walls of poorer quality buildings collapsed, and windows were shattered. A 50-year-old woman was reported to have died of a heart attack following the quake. It reminded many of the 8.8-magnitude quakes that hit Chile three years ago, which killed hundreds and caused billions of US dollars worth of damage. Officials say, since then measures have been taken to reduce the damage from earthquakes. And the navy says a tsunami is unlikely to occur.
