Chinese consumers are expressing concerns about the safety of New Zealand milk powder after the announcement that traces of a toxic substance had been found in some test samples.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Primary Industries says the amount of Dicyandiamide found in September does not pose a safety risk. The Fontera milk powder company claims the quantity was one hundred times lower than EU safety standards.
Chinese consumers are not happy with the fact that New Zealand took four months to release the information. Nearly 80 percent of dairy products imported by China come from New Zealand. The products are still on sale.
Dairy products from New Zealand, Europe and Australia have been popular on the Chinese mainland since the baby formula scandal in 2008. At least six babies dead and many others were sick after being fed with milk laced with the industrial chemical melamine.
