Super Typhoon Megi is forecast to arrive in southern China this weekend. The Central Meteorological Observatory has issued an early warning.

Guangdong and Fujian provinces, as well as Taiwan Island, are bracing for heavy rains and strong winds. Although the storm's threat appears to be easing, precautions haven't neglected. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from coastal areas.

This year's 13th typhoon is forecast to make landfall on the east coast of Guangdong Province by Saturday. Authorities have issued a code red warning, the top level, as the storm could create huge waves and devastate seaside areas.

More than 150-thousand people in neighboring Fujian Province have been evacuated. Fishing boats in both areas have been told not to leave port, and those already in the water have been ordered back to shore.

Fu Nanyang, Officer, Fujian Border Police Station, said, "We've strengthened our patrols along the coast, and are now trying to persuade fishermen to stay in the harbor."

Reservoirs and hydroelectric stations in Guangdong have been put on high alert. Flood control officials have been told to ensure the safety of venues for the upcoming Asian Games in the provincial capital, Guangzhou.

Su Zequn, General Director, Guangzhou Disaster Prevention Bureau, said, "Construction projects along the coast and river banks should take precautions against strong winds, high tides, and towering waves."

Local governments have ordered efforts to strengthen seawalls, protect fishing facilities, and patrol at-risk areas.

Typhoon Megi is predicted to be China's strongest of the year. The system has already wreaked havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 19 people earlier this week.
