As a music and dance style, Errenzhuan has seen better days. For decades, its upbeat folksy and comedic stylings were all the rage in northeastern China. That is, until the late 1980s, when pop music burst onto the scene, sending Errenzhuan the way of the record player.
But now, if one of China's most popular comedians has his way, Errenzhuan is about to make a comeback.
As the leader of the Liaoning Folk Art Troupe, Zhao Benshan is dedicated to reviving Errenzhuan. And so far, so good: last year, his troupe gave a record-breaking total of 2,127 performances and earned over 96-million yuan, ranking first among all performance groups in China.
"I spend most of my energy on my folk art troupe since it is closely related with my profession. The theatre, performing art school and the TV show and films, they are all in the folk art troupe system."
Based in Liaoyang, the Lianoning Folk Art Troupe books regular shows on the Liu Laogen Great Stage in Tianjin, Harbin, Changchun, and Benxi. But Zhao hopes to get all of China hooked on Errenzhuan.
"At first, I hope to change the survival status of Errenzhuan. Second, I want to open its market. We dream of setting up Liu Laogen Great Stage in every city, then establishing art schools to cultivate artistic talents on our own."
At present, the lowest ticket price for the Liu Laogen Great Stage is around 100 yuan while the highest is several hundred yuan. Although people still hold different opinions about Errenzhuan, many believe it's on its way to becoming a name card for Liaoyang City and Liaoning Province.
