WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The White House on Thursday said that U.S. President Barack Obama is comfortable with next year's presidential election being a referendum on his economic policies, and the president will be running on the record of saving the economy from depression.

Obama's Press Secretary Jay Carney made the remarks during his daily briefing, saying "every elected official who's running for office in 2012 will run on his or her record."

Answering a reporter's question, Carney said that Obama is OK with next year's election being a referendum on his economic policies.

"The president fully expects that when people cast their ballots in November of 2012, they will be making their decision based on their assessment of his record, what he's done, what he's accomplished, and obviously comparing that and what his vision is for the future, where he wants to take the country going forward, and comparing that to whoever is the candidate of the Republican party," said Carney.

Carney said that Obama will run on his record of "saving the American economy from great depression, reversing the kind of dramatic contraction in the economy and dramatic job loss we saw."

The Republican party has been shaping next year's election as a referendum on the president, saying his policies isn't creating jobs and making progress on the economic front. The Obama campaign, however, has been sticking to their statement that this election is still an election of choice.
