WASHINGTON, June 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama's nominee to serve as Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan on Thursday faced detailed grilling from senators, answering questions concerning whether she can be an impartial judge to her stand as regard to the military.

Kagan faced a whole day of questioning on her second day before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and lawmakers posed detailed questions to her as she has never been a judge and left no court rulings to reflect her opinions.

During the hearing, Kagan vowed her impartiality if she is to be made the high court justice. She said her personal politics " would be, must be, have to be, completely separate from my judging. "

She also answered questions regarding her stand on the matter of the military. During her years as Dean of the prestigious Harvard Law School, Kagan limited military recruiters' access to students in her school, as the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy conflicts the college's non-discriminatory policy towards homosexuals.

Answering a question posed by Jeff Sessions, the panel's top Republican, she said she believes the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy is "unwise and unjust," but she also reveres the military.

The hearing is to continue on Wednesday.
