President Trump has made an unannounced trip to Afghanistan, his first since taking office. Mr. Trump said he'd reopened talks with Taliban and believe they will open to a ceasefire. He told American troops by ground airfield their efforts and those of Afghan soldiers meant the Taliban wanted to make a deal.

A row has broken out between NATO allies, France and Turkey. President Marcon said Turkey's military operation against the Kurdish fighters in Syria was endangering NATO actions against the Islamic State group. Ankara accused him of sponsoring terrorism by hosting Kurdish militia representatives in Paris.

The Conservative Uruguayan senator Luis Lacalle Pou has won the presidential election, putting an end to 15 years of left-wing government in the country. Official results from Sunday's poll haven't been announced, but counting has almost finished.

Researchers in Brazil say smoke from burning forests in the Amazon can intensify the melting of glaciers, threatening water supply to millions of people. The scientists found evidence that snow and ice was being darkened, accelerating the rate of melting.

The police commander in charge on the day of Britain's worst sporting disaster at the Hillsborough football stadium 30 years ago has been cleared the gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool fans. The jury returned a not-guilty verdict at the retrial of David Duckenfield.
