The Bank of England says leaving the EU without a deal could do huge damage to the country’s economy. A collapse in the value for pound, soaring inflation and shrinking GDP would leave Britain facing a recession deeper than that after the global financial crisis 10 years ago.

At least 10 people have been killed in an attack in the Afghan capital Kabul. The Taliban said it carried out the assault that targeted the compound of a British security company.

A former sales president of a US drugs company has admitted bribing doctors to prescribe highly addictive opioid for minor ailments. The country is facing an opium crisis that more than 2 million people are using the drugs.

Scientists have warned that our food production systems are unsustainable and contribute to climate change. A report by medical and scientific academies calls for radical changes including a reduction of the use of meat.

Counting is underway after the presidential run-off voting in Georgia. Exit polls predict victory for the candidate backed by the governing party Salome Zurabishvili. But opposition party supporters have accused the authorities of electoral violations.

The ringing world chess champion Magnus Carlsen has retained his title after record long series of drawn games in London. The Norwegian beat his US challenger Fabiano Caruana in a series of rapid play tie-breakers.

And the French authorities said they wanted to stop a child being named Griezmann Mbappe after two of the heroes of last year’s football world cup. The parents wanted to honor the name who led France to victory, but the authorities said the name might cause problems later in life.
