A rare post-tropical cyclone has come ashore on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. It's one of the most powerful storms to hit the country since the 19th century. Portugal civil defense authorities have placed most of the nation on red alert. Officials have warned people not to venture outdoors for the next few hours. Alison Robert is in Lisbon. With 13 out of Portugal's 18 mainland districts on red alert, the authorities have warned people not to go out onto the street overnight because of the high winds. Gusts of up to 130 kilometers an hour are expected. In Lisbon, Setubal and Leiria districts where the storm first hit before swinging north, civil defense officials recorded 247 incidents in the first few hours, half of them fallen trees.

The BBC has learned that Britain and the United States are considering boycotting a high-profile investment conference in Saudi Arabia later this month after the disappearance of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Many sponsors and media groups have already pulled out. Our diplomatic editor is James Landale. It's called Davos in the desert, a high-profile investment conference in Riyadh later this month hosted by the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to promote his reform agenda. But I understand that Britain and the United States are also considering boycotting the conference if it's confirmed that Mr. Khashoggi was killed by Saudi agents. Diplomatic sources said both the US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and and the British Trade Secretary Liam Fox may not now attend. This would amount to a huge snub by two of Saudi Arabia's key allies.

President Trump has said the American pastor Andrew Brunson's release from prison in Turkey is a tremendous step in improving relations between Washington and Ankara. Speaking after welcoming Mr. Bronson at the White House, Mr. Trump thanked Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the pastor's release. To President Erdogan, thank you very much to the people of Turkey. Thank you very much. I think this will be a big step in our relationship. We have had a very harsh relationship over the past number of months because of what was happening and I'm not gonna blame fault. I'm not gonna say anything. I'm just saying this is a tremendous step toward having the kind of relationship with Turkey, which can be a great relationship that I know we're going to have.
