New efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict are underway in Kazakhstan. The negotiations have been convened by Russian and Iran who support the Syrian government, along with Turkey which backs the opposition. It's the first time a team made up exclusively of armed rebel groups has negotiated with the government, though the first session won't be face-to-face.

The former Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh, who's finally given up power after losing last month's election, has been accused of looting the country before his departure. A special adviser to the Gambia's new president, Adama Barrow, says more than 11 million dollars are thought to be missing from state coffers.

China says a decision to scrap its one-child policy has resulted in the births of 1.3 million more babies in 2016, compared with the year before. That's the highest birth rate since the year 2000. China brought into the one-child policy in the 1970s to limit population growth that now wants to replenish the country's shrinking workforce to support an aging population.

A prominent legal watchdog in the United States says it will file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump, alleging he is in breach of the Constitution by accepting payments from foreign governments through his hotels and leases on buildings. One of the lawyers involved said it's in attempt to secure a copy of Mr. Trump's tax returns, which the President has refused to publish.

An actor has died in Australia after being shot on site during the filming of a music video. Police in Brisbane have launched an investigation.

And Hungary is holding a day of national mourning for the victims of a coach crash in Italy. 16 people died, most of them pupils and teachers returning to Hungary from a skiing holiday in the French Alps. The coach crashed on the motorway near the Italian city of Verona on Friday night and was engulfed in flames.
