Millions of videos are uploaded to the internet every day, and London-based ASI Data Science has developed an artificial intelligence algorithm designed to identify those from extremist groups.

“So we can see two videos here. They look relatively similar to the untrained eye. But one of them is news footage of Daesh, the other is a Daesh propaganda video. The model that we have built is trained to look for a range of subtle signals that these videos are giving off that allow it to distinguish between Daesh propaganda and basically all of the other videos on the internet. So, here, we can see on the left. We have got a video that’s consistently giving a fairly low score. So this one is a news reporting, it’s safe, it can be passed through. On the other hand, the video on the right, here, is throwing off a large range of worrying looking signals.This is high risk. This is indeed-propaganda. And so the models being designed in such a way that platforms can use this as videos are uploaded to filter out the propaganda so that it can be removed before it hits the internet in the first place.”

That’s important because propaganda videos by Daesh, the arabic acronym for Islamic state are though to help radicalize some extremists.

“The home office research shows that there’s over a thousand different extremist videos online right now on 400 platforms, so even if Google and Facebook were to solve this overnight, this content would still be accessible through a web browser on, you know, 398 different platforms.”

The British Government is expected to give the software free of charge to those platforms currently hosting extremist videos online. ASI Data Science says, it’s software would make it possible for one person to moderate all the videos uploaded to YouTube or Facebook in a single day.
