1. The parent wants the child to do well in school, but the child does not like to read books.

do well in 成绩好，…做得好
例句：He will do well in that work because he has a lot on the ball.
他会做好这件事，因为他很有一手。

2. In fact, a few nouns are often used in conversation.

in fact 事实上; 实际上
例句：You have to admit that you are, in fact, in difficulties

3. In this sentence, thing refers to some kind of communication – in this case, a rumor – about two people going to a dance together.
