Back home, residents and staff at Fraser Island's largest resort and the neighbouring village have been told to prepare to leave as a bushfire on the island continues to burn out of control. Queensland's fire and emergency services minister says more than 75 firefighters have now been deployed to the blaze, which has burned through more than 80,000 hectares over the past seven weeks.
Lightning strikes during a wild storm in Sydney's inner west have caused a fire at an historic home, and left thousands without power. The state emergency service received hundreds of calls for help after the storm swept across Sydney and other parts of the state leaving behind a trail of damage.
And at least four people, including a baby, have died after a car ploughed through a pedestrian area in the western German city of Trier. The driver, a 51-year-old local man, has been arrested. The public prosecutor says he was drunk.
