Large swathes of Melbourne are this morning no-go zones, after the nation's top health officials warned people should avoid travel to and from six council areas across the city. They are all considered new hotstops for coronavirus, following a steady rise in cases since some restrictions were eased. Nearly 20% of Victoria's population lives in the affected areas, which include Melbourne's densely populated north, north-west and south-east. In response, the state government's tightened its COVID-19 control measures, with tougher restrictions on gatherings coming back into force this morning.
British police are treating a deadly knife attack in a park in Reading, west of London as a terrorist incident. Three people have been killed with another three seriously injured. The man suspected of carrying out the attack – 25-year-old Khairi Saadallah has been arrested. British media are reporting the man was known to the domestic security service, MI5.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases around the world is now nearing nine million. Six months ago there was just one reported infection. More than fifty thousand people have now died in Brazil. The South American country now has the second highest COVID-19 death toll after the United States.
