Hello, Mirian Carol with the top stories on ABC News.
The prime minister has conceded he caused "great anxiety in Australia" by taking a family holiday in Hawaii as bushfires burned across Australia, saying with the benefit of hindsight he would have made a different decision. Scott Morrison announced he would cut the island trip short on Friday, after the deaths of two volunteer firefighters in New South Wales. Today, the prime minister visited the RFS headquarters in Sydney.
The devastation caused by the Green Wattle Creek blaze at Balmoral, south of Sydney is becoming clear as residents return to their properties. Fire crews have been looking to make headway in bringing several blazes under control as temperatures ease across New South Wales. The state is not expected to receive significant rain for up to a month.

The death toll continues to rise from protests against a contentious citizenship law in India. Nine people have been killed during clashes with police in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh this weekend. Across the country more than 20 people have died and thousands have been arrested since the unrest began earlier this month. Critics say the law discriminates against Muslims and undermines India's secular constitution.
Those are the latest headlines from ABC News.
