The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus is now the highest in the world, surpassing 20,000 Saturday. Chicago and other cities across the Midwest braced for a potential surge in victims and moved to snuff out smoldering hot spots of contagion before they erupt.
New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Saturday that hospital admissions rate for people infected with the coronavirus in the State is down. Cuomo said a further 783 people had died in the state on Friday.
The Turin Shroud, a burial cloth some believe covered Jesus and which has links to a 16th-century plague in northern Italy, was put on special view for the faithful worldwide through video streaming. The act on Holy Saturday was to inspire hope amid the coronavirus pandemic.
