The defending Champion has emerged victorious after downing German fourth seed Angelique Kerber, first timer in a Wimbledon final.

It was Kerber who beat Serena Williams only six months ago in the Final of the Australian Open.

As such, the 28-year old was by no means intimidated by the world number one, bravely facing off three break points in the second game of the first set.

As such, Williams had to up her game, and did.

She took the first set 7-5.

From there, Williams dominated in the second set, putting home two aces in her final service game, and sealing victory with a powerful backhand to take home the title.

The 34-year old has now earned her 22nd Grand Slam title, equaling the Open-era mark set by German Steffi Graf.

Williams has been chasing this goal since last year, but had to suffer through losses at both the Australian and French Opens.

"I had a couple of tries this year, lost to two great opponents, one actually being Angelique. But it makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it and being here to receive my 22nd Grand Slam title is awesome."

Always a consummate Champion, Williams took time to give high praise to Kerber.

"She's such a great opponent, she really brings out great tennis in me, and then once we walk off the court, she's such a wonderful person to be around."

Wimbledon commentator and former Wimbledon champ Lindsay Davenport says she believes Williams showed true grit in being able to hold her nerve through this year's tournament.

"She worked so hard for this and she wants it so badly. It is fantastic o see it all fallen into place for her, and her handling the situation so great. I love to see history being made and I think she will go down as the all time winner in Grand Slams."

Serena Williams now has an opportunity to become the all-time Open-era Grand Slam Champion in front of a home crowd at this year's US Open in September.

A victory there will put her just one Grand Slam win away from tying the all-time Championship mark of 24 set by Australian Margaret Court.
