Hosts Canada defeated Switzerland 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Josee Belanger netted the only goal for Canada.
Canada head coach John Herdman was happy with the win.
"I'm proud of what these women are doing. We're going to grind results out, we're going to take our fans with us. That group of 50,000, they were right in there enjoying themselves right to the end and that's who Canada were."
Canada will next face the winners of a matchup between Norway and England.
USA will play Colombia in their round 16 encounter tomorrow at 8 a.m., Beijing time.
Head coach for team USA Jill Ellis offered these thoughts on the coming game.
"Well obviously very excited to head to the knockout round. Colombia obviously is a very good team, very technical team, very well organised and a lot of personalities on their team. They played very well in the matches I have seen, so a good opponent and we have to be prepared and ready to go to deal with the issues they put out and obviously focus on the things we need to do to be successful."
The two teams faced each other in the 2011 World Cup in Germany and the 2012 London Olympics, with America victorious on both occasions by the same 3-0 scoreline.
Next off for the winner of the game will be China, who edged past Cameroon on Saturday.
