Former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama has criticized Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's remarks on the security-related bills at the Group of Seven Summit.

During the two-day summit, Abe has reiterated his theory on "principles of international law" and "rule of law" on maritime security.

In response, Murayama has condemned Abe's act as ignorance of both international and domestic laws.

Murayama issued the 1995 apology statement for the damage and pains caused by Japan to its Asian neighbors during World War Two.

He added his words should not be watered down when Abe gives his speech later on this year.

"If Abe want to inherit the Murayama talks, he should clearly state this during the speech for the 70th anniversary of the war. This has a significant role in eliminating the international community's questions and misunderstandings."

Japanese leaders' war anniversary statements have always been closely watched, and this year's is getting extra attention because it marks the 70th anniversary of the World War Two.
