Steven Dominique Cheung has stopped over in Beijing to court media attention ahead of the May election in the UK.

Cheung says he's hoping to give a voice to Chinese community in the UK.

"Hundreds of volunteers work through the night and try to get more votes before May 7 which is the date of the general election. Now, I am running in Walthamstow, a district in the Greater London area."

While just 25-years old, Cheung says he does have a background in politics.

"At the age of 19, I worked for the local council. They told me why not try running for the European Parliament. If every Chinese in the UK votes for you, you may be able to win the election."

Cheung immigrated with his parents to England when he was 12.

His father is a chef and his mother works in the canteen of a primary school.

In 2009, Cheung became a member of British-Chinese Project.

This is an initiative meant to involve young British-Chinese in UK politics.

The British Consulate-General in Hong Kong also approached Cheung to become a campaign ambassador to promote the United Kingdom abroad in 2012.

Voters in the UK will decide whether Cheung, who is running as a Liberal Democrat, will find a seat in Parliament on May 7th.

For CRI, I'm Yu Yang.
