A statue of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has been unveiled on the Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas to the Argentines.

Thatcher was instrumental in retaining the small parcel of islands in South America under the Union Jack, despite having fought a bitter war over it with Argentina in 1982.

Mark Thatcher, the son of late Margaret Thatcher unveiled the bronze bust of his mother.

"I particularly note and like the fact that the sculptor has included a Union Jack on my mother's lapel, I think that is entirely fitting and gets an important message across. This is my first time to the Falkland Islands and I am extremely, extremely fortunate and greatly honoured to be here to unveil this bust of my mother who I know would be equally honoured and very humbled that you, the Falkland Islanders, have bestowed upon her such an honour."

The statue reportedly took two months and 50 kilograms of clay to create.

January 10th is celebrated locally as 'Margaret Thatcher Day'.

Saturday's ceremony marks 32 years since "the Iron lady" first visited the South Atlantic islands.

The islands, inhabited by less than 3,000 people, have been under British control since 1833, but are claimed by Argentina as well.

The two countries fought a brief war in June 1982, resulting in the death of 649 Argentines and 255 British soldiers.
