UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged delegates from more than 190 countries to deliver a draft ahead of the climate conference in Paris next year.

"I urge all delegations to overcome all procedural matters and deliver a draft negotiating text with a formal status, so that the work on negotiation can begin in earnest at the February session. We don't have a moment to lose."

Ban made the remarks during the plenary session of the UN climate talks held in Peru's capital Lima.

Climate talks are set to seek a new worldwide deal to limit greenhouse gas emissions and keep global warming from causing irreversible damage.

Negotiators are trying to define the elements that should go into next year's deal, with disputes over money halting progress.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala.

"The Peruvian government, as president of the COP20, has assumed the great challenge of hosting the talks a year before the adoption of a global climate agreement that has universal reach. In this sense, we have chosen to be a key character in the reduction of climate risks and facilitate the preparation of a draft of this agreement."

Rich countries are resisting demands to pledge financing to help poor countries tackle climate change.

Ban has called on big carbon polluters to announce emissions targets for next year's conference in Paris.
