China's chief justice is calling for special attention to be paid to cases involving juvenile offenders.

Zhou Qiang has made the call to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of juvenile courts in China.

"Over 1.5 million minors have been sentenced by juvenile courts over the past 30 years and most of them have become law-abiding citizens after education and correction."

Statistics suggest only 2 percent of those who have gone through the juvenile court system have re-offended.

There are over 22 hundred juvenile courts across China, with the first being established in Shanghai in 1984.

At the same time, those found responsible for child trafficking, organized begging, child molestation and rape are set to face even harsher punishments.
