Three West African presidents have visited Burkina Faso to press the country's military leaders to return the country to civilian rule as quickly as possible.

Presidents Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, Macky Sall of Senegal and John Mahama of Ghana have travelled to Burkina Faso to represent the regional economic group ECOWAS.

They've met with members of the opposition and transitional leader Isaac Zida.

Zephirin Diabre is the leader of the opposition in Burkina Faso.

"Coming here today will certainly help them to meet the new leader and his team and to have his vision and his thinking and also to meet with various stakeholders in society, political parties and civil societies, also listen to them and then have a feeling. That will enable them to have a comprehension and understanding of the situation as it is on the ground."

The opposition is warning people may once again return to the streets and demonstrate if a transitional plan isn't put in place within the next two weeks.

Opposition protests last week forced former President Blaise Compaore to resign and flee the country after a failed attempt to try to extend his 27-year hold on power.

The military then stepped in, designating Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida as the transitional leader.

The African Union has given the military in Burkina Faso a two-week deadline to hand over power or face sanctions that could cripple the impoverished country.
