A total of eight relief teams have been dispatched to Jinggu County in Yunnan to deal with the aftermath of Tuesday night's earthquake which left one person dead and hundreds of others injured.

The 6.6 magnitude quake levelled nearly 7-thousand homes in the remote region of Yunnan, which is located about 500-kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, Kunming.

Of the 324 injured, eight are in critical condition.

Soldiers and police are delivering relief supplies, including tents and blankets, to the quake zone.

The quake also left two local reservoirs with cracks, forcing the evacuation of over 500 people.

Fu Hong is a researcher with the earthquake research and forecasting center in Yunnan.

"According to our analysis, over the next three days those in the quake zone should be aware of the likelihood of a 5-to-6-magnitude aftershock. So residents in the quake zone should be braced for any possible contingencies."

So far, over 400 aftershocks have been recorded in the quake zone.

Yunnan is prone to earthquakes, as it sits at the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
