A new report from the World Wildlife Fund for Nature is suggesting the global wildlife population has fallen by half in just the past four decades.

The report is pointing the finger at human intervention.

Doctor Robin Freeman with the Zoological Society of London says the decline is "catastrophic."

"The report is showing that we've had an overall decline of about 56 per cent globally. So we've seen catastrophic declines in numbers of wild animals in populations around the world. The likelihood is that's due to a lot of human interference."

But at the same time, Freeman says the situation can be improved if the world embraces a more sustainable lifestyle.

"I think that it's not all doom and gloom. If we can work together to have a more sustainable living standard and reduce our ecological footprint, we can show that these declines can be ameliorated against or reduced in future."

Most of the losses have been found in tropical regions, particularly in Latin America.
