Security has been beefed up in the Afghan capital of Kabul ahead of today's inauguration of the President-elect Ashraf Ghani.

Extra police checkpoints have been set up around the city.

Thousands of police officers are also on patrol, as the Taliban has threatened to launch attacks.

Sediq Sediqi is with the Afghan Interior Ministry.

"For the presidential inauguration ceremony for tomorrow, the Afghan national police force have taken strong security measures, especially in Kabul city. We will do everything to make sure that this happens in a very secure environment."

Today's inauguration will also see presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah be named chief executive, a post similar to prime minister.

Ghani, a former Afghan finance minister, has agreed to share power with Abdullah, ending months of political turmoil in Afghanistan following the election earlier this year.

A large number of foreign dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony today in Kabul.
