Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for more strategic trust between China and the United States as he met with U.S. President Barack Obama's national security advisor in Beijing.
Xi Jinping's meeting with Susan Rice comes ahead of Obama's impending visit to Beijing in November.
"We stand ready to build a new major model for our country's relationship with the US and to build a non-confrontational and non-conflicting bilateral relationship based on mutual respect."
He said strategic trust constitutes a cornerstone for the "tower" of the new-model relationship.
The Chinese president also urged the two countries to take care of each other's core interests and major concerns and properly address disputes and reduce friction.
For her part, Susan Rice has told Xi Jinping it's the US hope to work more closely with China in the future.
"President Obama firmly believes that the US-China relationship is one of the most consequential bilateral relationships in the world and that there is virtually no problem of global significance that can be better resolved when the United States and China are working together at the same table."
In an earlier meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Rice said the US is deeply committed to developing productive and mutual beneficial bilateral relationship with China.
Susan Rice's time here is meant to set the agenda for Obama's forthcoming visit to Beijing for November's APEC summit.
The visit also comes on the heels of dispute between China and the US over a close-encounter involving one-another's military aircraft over the South China Sea last month.
During a meeting with Rice, vice-Chair of China's Central Military Commission, Fan Changlong, urged the U.S. military to reduce and ultimately stop what he calls "close-in reconnaissance" on China.
