Doctors Without Borders is warning the world is losing the battle against Ebola.

The suggestion comes amid word the death toll from the deadly virus in West Africa has now surpassed 15-hundred, including 120 medical workers.

Over 35-hundred cases have been reported as of this week.

Joanne Liu, President of Doctors Without Borders, has issued a call for a global response at a United Nations forum in New York.

"We have been losing for the past six months. We must win over the next three. And we can. Many of the member states represented here today have invested heavily in biological threat response. You have a political and humanitarian responsibility to immediately utilise these capabilities in Ebola infected countries."

In an effort to contain the outbreak, Sierra Leone, one of the countries worst hit by Ebola, has banned taxi drivers from carrying more than three passengers at a time.

But at the same time, medical staff in Liberia have gone on strike, complaining they haven't been paid for the last two months.

Countries surrounding the current outbreak have closed their land borders with the hardest-hit, which are Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, the death toll from a separate Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has left over 30-people dead.

The WHO has confirmed the outbreak in the DR Congo is a distinct and independent event, with no relationship to the outbreak in West Africa.
