Rafael Nadal will not defend his title at the upcoming US Open because of an injured right wrist.
The 27-year-old Spaniard was hurt on July 29th while practicing at home ahead of the North American hard-court circuit.
The next day, Nadal said he was told by doctors to wear a cast on his wrist for two to three weeks, forcing him to sit out the US Open warm-up tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati.
He originally hoped to be able to return to action in time for the US Open.
But on Monday, he issued a statement on his Facebook page, saying he is "very sorry to announce" he is out of the tournament.
