India's newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made his first official trip to Indian-administered Kashmir, where separatist groups have called a strike that shut shops, businesses and schools.

Modi is planning to inaugurate a railway line and review security and development in the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan.

Police say a curfew has been declared in the old quarters of Srinagar and residents have been asked to stay indoors.

The restrictions are reportedly imposed to prevent any violent protests by separatist groups who oppose Indian rule.

But some locals are unhappy with the curfew.

"We are happy that the Indian Prime Minister has come here, but they have converted this place into a garrison. Soldiers are everywhere and searching everyone everywhere, people are not even allowed to go to the hospital. This is tyranny. On this day they should not have imposed a curfew. They should have kept things open so that the Prime Minister would have himself learned what Kashmiris want."
