China's top legislature has ratified two new national days, one to mark the victory over Japan in the war and the other to commemorate the victims in the Nanjing Massacre.

September 3rd has been designated as Victory Day.

December 13th is now the national memorial day for the victims of the Nanjing massacre.

The decision has been made following a three-day session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

China's defense ministry has since issued a statement following the ratification.

Yang Yujun, spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense.

"We are urging the Japanese leaders to face up to and reflect on Japan's history of aggression, in order to win the trust of its Asian neighbors and the whole world, instead of making irresponsible remarks regarding memorial activities held by the countries that suffered in the war."

Japanese troops initiated the massacre on December 13th, 1937, killing some 300-thousand people over a period of 40-days.
