The acting President of Ukraine has issued a warning about the potential for a breakup of his country following the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych.

His comment comes amid continuing protests in Ukraine's Russian-speaking eastern regions against the new administration in Kiev.

Interim President Olexander Turchynov has since delayed the formation of a unity government until at least Thursday.

Turchynov says the delay will give him more time for consultations.

At the same time, the EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also released a statement, pleading for Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Ashton is in Kiev for talks with the government and opposition leaders.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian parliament has voted to forward a claim of mass murder against Viktor Yanukovych to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

This comes after the country's acting prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Yanukovich on charge of 'aggravated mass murder' connected to the over 100-deaths connected to the weeks of demonstrations.

Prosecutor General Oleh Makhnitsky.

"On the facts of murders: there are around 50 people involved in this case. Probably the number will increase. But this is what we have investigated up until now and among them are former top officials of the country."

Yanukovych fled Kiev on Saturday.

His whereabouts are still unclear.

Russia's government is insisting Yanukovych remains the legitimate President, despite parliament voting to remove him.

China's Foreign Ministry has released a new statement, calling for a political process to move forward under the framework of Ukrainian law.
