People are sizzling in scorching temperatures as a heat wave continues in most parts of China.

The national weather forecaster says the heat wouldn't soothe until next week in southern China, while the northern part may be exempted from the unusually high temperatures on Wednesday.

Zhang Ru has more.

Reporter: The National Meteorological Center says sweltering weather, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius, could be expected in at least 16 provinces and regions across China. Mercury levels might even top 40 degrees in parts of the country.

Drought has been affecting corn and potato crops in Inner Mongolia. But the National Meteorological Center says the overall impact on crops will be limited in most parts.

The continuing heat since last week has caused surges of patients at hospitals, most of which have been children and the elderly.

Zhu Jijin is head of the emergency department at a hospital in southern China's Nanning city.

"Since the heat wave hit the city, we have seen a hike of 20% in patients."

The doctor says most of the patients are suffering from cardiovascular, respiratory diseases and diarrhea, which are frequently seen in hot days.

Concerns have been raised for construction workers and dustmen, who have to work in the sweltering weather.

To cope with the problem, flexible working hours have been introduced by some companies for workers to avoid being exposed to the rays. Meanwhile, trade unions are urging employers to pay allowances for those working outdoors.

While the soaring temperatures drive huge numbers of people in search of places and ways to cool off, business opportunities are also generated by the intense heat.

Many people go to restaurants and shopping malls to escape the heat. Swimming pools are also becoming crowded.

Dai Hui is with Haidian Pool in Beijing.

"Compared with last month, we have seen more swimmers, especially on the weekends. The average number of swimmers has increased by more than 30%."

At department stores and supermarkets, air-conditioners, electric fans and sleeping mats are hot items. The sales of beverages, beer and ice-cream are also rising.

"Because the World Cup falls in this summer, every day the sales of beer is huge. The high temperatures also shore up the demands for tea beverages and mineral water."

According to the weather forecast, Wednesday may bring somewhat cooler weather in northern China, but the south may have to wait for another week to see cooler temperatures.
