The world's biggest high-tech fair CeBIT fair has opened in Germany. Many IT giants hope to bounce back strongly from a terrible 2009 by wooing consumers with trendy gadgets at the fair.

Our reporter Li Dong has more.

Reporter: "Connected Worlds" is the theme of this year's CeBIT fair, reflecting the internet's dominance of the modern world.

As Avatar and other 3D movies fill cinemas around the globe, the next phase of 3D will be home devices for televisions, PC and laptops.

Acer debuted its new Aspire 5740D which boasts 3D effects on a notebook.

The 16.6 inch display features a patented media player that converts two-dimensional data in real time, thus converting conventional photos and videos into a three-dimensional world. All the viewer needs is a pair of polarized glasses for a 3D experience.

Alexander Kahl, Product Manager for Acer Inc. in Germany says that their product will appeal to a wide range of people.

"We are talking about home movie enthusiasts, about multimedia users, about architects using 3D computer applications and of course gamers. These four are exactly our target group. The biggest feedback comes from the gamers at the moment. With the movies we see at the theatres, like e.g. Avatar, we have wide access and there's a first acceptance and experience with the 3D technology so that we don't have to persuade the people. They've experienced it already. They know what we are talking about."

At the new "Broadband World" pavilion, companies are showcasing approaches to mastering the challenge of rapidly growing data volumes in our networks.

This includes the opportunities offered by the next generation of mobile communications—Long Term Evolution or LTE, or some believed to be the 4G technology.

Alcatel Lucent unveiled a car equipped with the latest multimedia, bringing gadgets more associated with the home on the move. Uli Moehlmann, is spokesman of Alcatel Lucent in Germany.

"Finally in the future, we will have the same (technological) opportunities in an automobile (environment) as we use and have at home already today. This means, there will be access to any content and any applications which are existing now and which will be available with the LTE (technology) in a car in the future."

Elsewhere a new electronic passport for German citizens was revealed. Jan Moeller, of the German Interior Ministry, says the new passport is pocket sized and much more convenient.

"At first, the new passport will have the size of a credit card and therefore it will fit much better in our purse. And the small one can do more things compared to the big (old) one. You will also be able to identify yourself online / in the internet."

All in all, a total of 4,157companies from 68 different nations are appearing at CeBIT 2010. The fair runs from March 2-6.
