广播听力: Campaign Calls Attention to Prevention of Child Trafficking

Continuing its journey from Northwest China's city of Kunming, the anti-child trafficking campaign now travels to Beijing and members of local community are finding it practically helpful in protecting women and children, especially in poorer neighborhoods. XYee has more.(www.hXen.com)

Despite the progress made in recent years, child trafficking is still a problem in some parts of China. Yin Yin Nwe, UNICEF representative to China, describes the situation she has observed during a media event in Beijing's Fengtai District.

"There are disparities. You have poor areas and you have not so poor and wealthy areas. So naturally between these two areas, and also across borders, you do have some trafficking of woman and children."

In early December of 2007, the government adopted its first National Plan of Action to Combat Abduction and Trafficking of Women and Children. The plan, to be implemented from 2008 to 2012, aims to reduce the trafficking of women and children in the country and minimize the physical and psychological pain the victims suffer.

In response to the national plan, the All China Women's Federation, together with other related organizations, launched the "2009 Campaign for Safe Growth of Children," conveying messages on anti-trafficking to those at-risk as well as the community at large.

Jiang Yue'e, the director of the Equity Department of the All China Women's Federation, speaks of the campaign's focus:

"This campaign focuses on promoting knowledge of anti-trafficking among the public and enhancing their prevention awareness."

Jiang Yue'e gives a detailed account of activities carried out in the campaign:

"We are carrying out the campaign in communities to have face-to-face communication with people. Also, anti-trafficking materials in the form of brochures, disks and leaflets will be distributed among heavily populated communities, along the railway and in the bus."

Yin Yin Nwe, UNICEF representative to China, speaks positively of China's efforts on trafficking prevention.

"Trafficking is a multi-sectoral problem. To combat it, you have to start from the community level, you have to raise people's awareness. I think our partnership with All China's Women Federation is ideal for raising such awareness, because All China Women's Federation has got grass roots level networks."

Many parents and children attending the event regard it as helpful.

Xia Jing is an 11-year-old student at Xin Fadi Elementary School, where more than 80 percent of students come from migrant worker families whose children are especially vulnerable to human traffickers.

"I've learned some useful tips on how to deal with bad guys. And I want to share with my friends the knowledge on trafficking prevention."

Guan Yuqin's mother also finds the event helpful:

"I was not specific at all in educating my daughter on how to deal with strangers. Via today's event, I've acquired some specific knowledge which is quite helpful."

The anti-child trafficking campaign has been continuing its journey from Kunming to Beijing, where it has been spreading awareness of trafficking prevention since August 16.
