Some entrepreneurs, scholars and local government officials in China have repeatedly proposed to cancel " minimum wage" and the " paid vacation" in an attempt to relieve the pressure on corporations amid the deepening economic downturn.

A commentary in the Beijing based Workers' Daily argues that the proposal reveals an indifferent attitude to the legitimate rights of laborers and a disrespect for the authority of laws. (www.hxen.com)

The author points out that as the financial crisis takes its toll on some small-and-medium sized enterprises, corporations shirk responsible measures of economic restructuring , technological innovation and management innovation. Instead they focus on how to maximize their labor force.

The article says that ensuring the basic rights of laborers can help to shore up social confidence needed to weather this financial storm.

Curtailing laborer's rights is a short-sighted tactic for handling economic recession losses, because having an engaged workforce is fundamental to a corporation's competitive edge.

The author concludes that the ultimate goal for corporate economic development should be to improve the livelihood of its workforce, and enterprises that do not do so are destined to decay even during the period of economic prosperity.
