In his speech, Chinese premier Wen Jiabao introduced the achievements China has made in poverty reduction with accurate figures, noting that the population of extreme poverty has reduced over 230 million in the past 30 years. Meanwhile, China is also offering help to other developing countries.
"As a responsible developing country which is not wealthy, China has kept its promise to realize the millennium development goals. We have provided due assistance to some least developed countries in the world."
This year marks the halfway point towards the target date of 2015 set by UN for the Millennium Development Goals.
Although significant progress has been made, urgent and increased efforts are needed by all stakeholders in order to meet the Goals. The High-level meeting is a forum for world leaders to review progress, identify gaps, and commit to concrete efforts, resources and mechanisms to bridge the gaps.
Wen Jiabao says that China will carry out a set of new measure to provide aid and support to other developing countries, so as to help realize the MDGs in the whole world, such as increase the aid and support in the agricultural area, enhance the communication in the education field between China and other developing countries, upgrade the medical facilities in African countries, help build projects of clean energy in developing countries, and so on.
He also calls on the international community, especially the developed countries to shoulder the responsibility to help developing countries to fulfill their Millennium Development Goals.
"We should strengthen the international assistance. Developed countries in particular should take the responsibility to help developing countries. The assistance should be unselfish and with no pre-conditions."
Wen Jiabao says the population of the developing countries accounts for four fifth of the whole world. The realization of the MDGs set by the United Nations means a truly harmoniously world that is beyond disputes and barriers.
