Kenya's president Mwai Kibaki says he is deeply disturbed by the violence which has gripped his country. The president adds he is ready to hold talks with "concerned parties once the nation is calm."

Kibaki's comments were part of a statement he read to reporters at a news conference in the capital Nairobi.

"Fellow Kenyans, I am deeply disturbed by the senseless violence instigated by some leaders in pursuit of their personal political agendas. This is causing unnecessary loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of innocent wananchi (people) from their homes, especially women and children."

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has said he will not meet with Kibaki unless the latter concedes he lost the presidency, something Kibaki is unlikely to do.

Political disputes in Kenya have degenerated into ethnic violent conflicts.

About 300 people have been killed and 100,000 more displaced.
