The sixth seed David Ferrer was not seriously tested by an error-prone Serb Novak Djokovic, winning 6-4, 6-4.
David Ferrer said he was in great physical shape and was playing with confidence, while his opponent, world number three Djokovic, was probably a bit nervous and thus lost the game.
World number two Rafael Nadal followed a different path, overcoming a sluggish start to beat Frenchman Richard Gasquet in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Gasquet overwhelmed Nadal in the first set but failed to keep his consistency, losing in just over two hours.
Nadal said he started the match with doubts because he felt a little bit nervous at the beginning as every match was against the best player. He later played a little bit more aggressive and then grasped the turning point in the second set.
